Our UU Principles call us to work toward a fair and peaceful world with peace, liberty and justice for all. With the holiday season quickly approaching, it is a good time to shift our focus to sharing our plenty with others. Here are some fun and simple ways for UUs of all ages to give back:
- Start with a book! Sometimes starting the conversation is as easy as learning about a new cause or sharing a picture book about giving with a child.
Have a discussion: What does “social justice” mean to you?
Identify your passions: Is there a child in your family who is particularly crazy about animals? Or maybe your family cares deeply about adoption or foster care. Finding the right organization can make all the difference
Discover the best way to help: Call the organizations that you are interested in helping; does the local soup kitchen need money or do they need people to help serve food?
Go Local: Choosing a local organization allows your family to not only give money to a cause, but also allows you to learn much more about the organization and make a difference in your own back yard.
Giving (instead of Gifts): If you are hosting a holiday party ask guests to consider making a small donation to your organization. Or instead of buying gifts in excess, make a commitment as a family to buy less and give more!
