I am so excited and proud to announce our big summer project; the children will be working along side adult volunteers to grow a vegetable garden, which will help supply the North End Soup Kitchen with fresh produce this summer.
Not only will our children and youth have the opportunity to learn about what it takes to grow and sustain a garden, but they will also have the chance to learn about social justice issues; from buying and eating local to issues around combating hunger.
On April 19th, the children and youth led us in a special worship service to kick off this special project; we welcomed a representative from the North End Soup Kitchen to speak about their organiation, we celebrated caring for our Earth through readings and songs and we plated seeds to car for until the ground is prepared for planting. The whole service revolved around the story Stone Soup By Jon J. Muth; the story reminds us that if we all contribute something, even if it is something small, we can make a big difference!
Many people, of all ages, have already stepped forward and volunteered to share their "gifts" throughout the summer. Some have volunteered their time, while others have volunteered supplies and expertise. I can't wait to see what we can all do by working together!
